Let’s be real: building a segmental retaining wall is already a big project. So why not make it easier, stronger, and better looking by choosing curves instead of corners? As an expert in retaining wall design, I’ve seen firsthand why curved retaining walls aren’t just more attractive—they’re also the smarter, more engineered choice.

What’s So Great About Curved Retaining Walls?

Whether you’re designing your wall from scratch or following a professional plan, one thing holds true: curved retaining walls offer big advantages over sharp corners.

Here’s what I’ve discovered (and what engineers, designers, and DIYers agree on):

1. Curved Walls Reduce Loading on the Face

Think about it: a sharp corner concentrates pressure at the point of the turn. That’s a lot of stress for those blocks! But when you use a curve, the load from the soil is spread more evenly across the face.

The curve naturally deflects pressure around the arc—distributing force instead of concentrating it. Segmental retaining walls (SRWs) can tolerate a lot, but spreading the pressure helps prevent cracking, bulging, and long-term failure.

2. Geogrid Orientation Works Better in Curves

Geogrid is key for wall strength. It’s like the hidden backbone behind your wall. But did you know it works best when it aligns with the load?

In a curved retaining wall, the geogrid tends to be aligned more directly with the load direction—which improves pullout resistance and reduces stress on the wall face. You get a smoother load path from soil to reinforcement, which is a big win for performance.

Corners, on the other hand, create a mismatch between load direction and geogrid orientation. While the load path follows the bisector of the corner, geogrid is always placed perpendicular to the wall face—meaning it ends up angled relative to the actual load path, which weakens the system.

3. Curved Walls Handle Settlement Like Champs

All soils settle. That’s a fact. But here’s the cool part: curved segmental retaining walls can flex and adjust slightly without cracking—especially in areas with variable or uneven foundation soils.

Corners, by contrast, are rigid and less forgiving. If one side of the corner settles more than the other, cracks can form at the joint. Not a good look—and a potential structural concern.

4. No Special Blocks, No Tricky Cuts

Corners often require custom corner units, or you’ll be cutting blocks to make the turn. That’s extra time, effort, and potential for mistakes.

Curves? They use the exact same block for the whole wall. No cuts. No special orders. You simply adjust the spacing between blocks slightly as you follow your radius.

It’s easier. It’s faster. And it’s way more beginner-friendly.
